Integrating Higher Education Planning and Assessment: Real Strategies for Real Institutions

August 13-14, 2009 - InterContinental Hotel, San Juan, Puerto Rico

© PUERTO RICO CONVENTION BUREAU (PRCB).

About the Institute

This comprehensive institute will provide participants with solid grounding on the MSCHE standards related to planning and assessment, in respect to both conceptual content and strategies for demonstrating compliance.

Institutions are encouraged to send teams, including planning and institutional research directors and staff, assessment directors/coordinators, self-study chairs and steering committee members, academic affairs personnel, and other interested faculty and administrators.

Participants are encouraged to bring documents related to their institutional mission as a basis for group exercises focusing on building planning and assessment processes that are thoroughly rooted in that mission.

Topics and Learning Opportunities

The central focus of this workshop will be how to best inform the institutional planning process with outcomes measures. While the presenters will provide a brief overview of assessment of student learning and its relationship to institutional improvement, the primary emphasis will be on assessment of the effectiveness of the strategic plan.

- Fundamental elements of best practices in institutional planning
- Examples of institutions engaged in best practices
- Discussion on preparing the planning process, practical approaches to collecting relevant and reliable assessment information, and best ways to use such information as the basis for institutional planning and resource allocation decisions

Institute Presenters

Dr. Michael F. Middaugh, Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness, University of Delaware; Vice Chair, Middle States Commission on Higher Education
